Hardware Pre-Purchase Consultation

Confused or intimidated by all the terms associated with technology purchases? I have advised several clients on what is the appropriate to consider. Not too much, within your budget. I can also advise where you might consider buying, where the best deals are to be found. I also can advise you on the pros and cons of extended period service plans, either from Apple directly, or from third party sources.

Conversion Services

Whether you are coming from an older Mac, or a Windows computer, I have the experience and tools to convert most data you might want to bring over with you to your new machine. This typically involves documents, email, address books, music, pictures, etc. I’ve found from experience that there is a right way do some of these tasks. This can save lots of headaches later.

Limited Data Recovery Services

Recently I’ve had occasion to recover data from clients’ failing hard drives. This involved extracting the actual hard drive, attaching it to an adapter allowing it be read from another Mac, then using software that most users would not purchase for themselves, recover the most important data to an external hard drive, ultimately to be transferred to the client’s new computer.

Setting up a Backup Solution

Very important for anyone with data they would be sad to lose for lack of backup. Modern Macs running the Time Machine program can backup their data AUTOMATICALLY to an inexpensive external storage device or an Apple Time Capsule.

Tuneups

Is your current computer running slower than when it was new? Even Macs can slow down over time. Fear not, there are some solutions that can restore some of the speed you used to have. I have a number of purchased optimization software tools to accomplish these tasks. And I can advise you which free tools you should use to
keep your system running smoothly after I leave.

Upgrades

Often in conjunction with overall evaluations, I recommend either hardware upgrades and/or software upgrades to achieve better performance. For a 3-4 year old computer, this is typically less expensive than buying a new computer. Hardware upgrades most often include more file storage, either internal or external hard drives. More installed RAM (random access memory) can improve speed as well. Software upgrades most often include operating system upgrades, and sometimes iLife or iWork upgrades to two of Apple’s most popular application suites.

iPod/iPhone/iPad/AppleTV integration

Do you have questions about how more effectively share data between your computer and mobile devices? I can show you what’s possible, especially when Apple’s MobileMe or iCloud is involved. I own all these devices personally, and share my experiences in making these all talk together.

Wireless Network Setup/Troubleshooting

Wireless internet at home as well as wireless printing are popular services I help set up. I have experience with all the Apple wireless products, as well as many other 3rd party wireless routers.

Old Analog Media Conversion

Have a box of your favorite LP’s from the 60’s that you’d like to play on your iPod? I have the equipment and experience to convert and clean up old 33 and 45 records, and cassette tapes. Output to CD, DVD, or a storage device in a format that can be played on your current devices, i.e. computers, iPods, etc. If you have a shoebox of old pictures from your parents you want scanned, I have equipment for that also. I recently converted several VHS tapes to DVD’s for a client.
